Welcome to Myponga Bookkeeping!

Bookkeeping is often a dreaded aspect of owning a business. Changing legislation and penalties for missing BAS submission deadlines at the Australian Taxation Office can make doing your own bookkeeping confusing and costly, not to mention time consuming, meaning you spend less time doing what you do best – running your business!

A friend or relative may be a cheap alternative to hiring a bookkeeper, but using anyone who isn’t experienced with the basics of bookkeeping may be a recipe for disaster, and new legislation (due to be brought in early 2010) will restrict who can legally provide BAS services.

Make sure your bookkeeper is KNOWLEDGEABLE and COMPETENT. They should understand the difference between assets, liabilities, equity, income, cost of goods sold, and expense accounts, and be competent in using a computerized bookkeeping program, like MYOB.

Ensure they will be AVAILABLE and DEPENDABLE to keep your bookkeeping up to date. Monitoring cash flow and profit and loss are important in assessing how the business is traveling and your bookkeeper should enter information on a consistent basis so you can get reports in a timely manner. Your bookkeeper should also be able to spend the time to make sure you understand the material they have given you. Often smaller bookkeeping businesses can provide a more focused and customised service in this aspect that larger firms cannot, due to a higher number of clients.

Your bookkeeper should be ACCOUNTABLE and ACCREDITED. You want a bookkeeper that will provide relevant and reliable information, not just code everything to “miscellaneous,” while also complying with new legislation, requiring bookkeepers to have a minimum qualification of Cert IV in Financial Services, with 1400 hours relevant experience or be working under the direction of a registered tax agent, to provide BAS services. Look for bookkeepers who are accredited members of a professional body, such as the Institute of Certified Bookkeepers.
